Nine

And now you are nine...

It was a quiet day of celebration. No streamers, no balloons, no sleep-overs, no friends. There were your favorite foods all day. There was a movie in the afternoon. There was homemade ice cream in the afternoon. There was just the four of us. And I think that's what you wanted.

You grinned all day, knowing that you were older.

Overnight, you became taller. Smarter. Faster. Older. There were big, nine-year-old shoes to fill, and fill them you did.

How it that the things that make children the happiest make parents the most anxious. I'm not quite ready for you to grow up this quickly. But watching you zip around on your new (bigger) bike, watching you read more advanced books, watching you become more responsible, I realize that you are filling this new, little bit older role just fine.

Ready or not, now you are nine.

  1. I have been astounded by how fast my kids seem to grow! Mine are 10 and 12 now and I am still trying to figure out when it happened!

It is an exciting time watching their minds develop and seeing them mature and become more and more independent. I love it that we don't have to help them with baths, wipe their noses, cut their food up into smaller bites, and a thousand other things they used to need help with. However, I am finding that the older they get, the more I miss those very things! :)

  2. Awwww! I remember how each year was exciting because we knew we were older and older was a GOOD thing. Not so much once you're grown! BEAUTIFUL cake.

  3. Yes! to all that the Book Nut says! The cake IS fabulousHey, he's wearing the glasses! Tell him he definitely looks more mature!! There's an ache watching the growing and a joy seeing how well they master each milestone, learn the important things. He is doing fine modeling of adult roles. But, like all kids, he likely lives in the land of forever, where kids never really believe they're a kid just once.

  6. So sweet - and scary at the same time! Punky will be there, too in a matter of months.

    Beautiful cake.
